Anthony Shriver – Dr. Maya Warren: July 12, 2017

Founder, Best Buddies International; son of Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Cold Stone Creamery Tastemaster, Food Scientist; winner of The Amazing Race season 25

There are 200 million people in the world living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Recognizing a need, in 1989 Anthony Shriver, son of Eunice Kennedy Shriver (founder of the Special Olympics) started an organization in his Georgetown dorm room that paired individuals with disabilities (buddies) and those without disabilities (peer buddies).

That organization has evolved into Best Buddies International, which today has chapters in every state in the country and nearly 50 countries worldwide. The IDD community that Best Buddies serves includes people with Down syndrome, autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury and other undiagnosed disabilities. A primary goal of Best Buddies is helping those with IDD secure employment. According to National Core Indicators, 84% of adults with developmental disabled do not have a paid job in the community. Best Buddies works with companies to encourage employers to hire people with IDD. The Best Buddies Jobs program focuses on developing competitive, integrated jobs that allow participants  to  earn  an  income,  pay  taxes,  and  work  in  an  environment alongside their peers, leading to full inclusion and independence. Best Buddies Jobs participants work an average of 1,217,526 hours per year and earn approximately $14.9 million combined annually.

On July 12, founder Anthony Shriver will be joined by food scientist and The Amazing Race season 25 winner Dr. Maya Warren, official Tastemaster™ for Cold Stone Creamery to discuss how Best Buddies is teaming up with Cold Stone Creamery to help support their mission to end the social, physical and economic isolation of people with IDD

by launching a jobs program pairing members of Best Buddies with their local store.
