Learn self-defense basics from being aware of your surroundings, to improving your reflexes and reaction time

U.S. Army Veteran and former police officer; owner/founder of Wright’s Gym & Krav Maga Pittsburgh; master instructor in police defensive tactics

You’re walking to your car alone at night. You sense someone is watching you. What should you do next? There are many steps you can take to avoid being a target of violent crime. Awareness of your surroundings, trusting your gut instincts and walking with confidence can all lessen the likelihood of a random attack. But if you should come face-to-face with danger, what would you do? Knowing the answer to questions like this could save your life.

Effective self-defense tactics will help prepare you for any situation. On November 19th, self-defense expert David Wright will be available for interviews. He will offer tips on essential elements of self-defense, including ways to improve your reflexes and reaction time, the importance of being aware of your surroundings, and how to strike and subdue an attacker before it’s too late.

In this segment, David will expand on the following tips:

  • Situational awareness: Think like a police officer on patrol by keeping yourself aware of surroundings and out of potentially dangerous situations.
  • Start training: Find a self-defense class or martial art that works for you! Taking classes in Krav Maga, Brazilian jiu jitsu and others not only prepares your body and mind to defend itself, but also builds a ton of confidence and increases fitness. Just make sure your instructor has a real background in the martial art you choose.
  • Safe at the holiday party: Always know what you are drinking, and make sure you don’t leave drinks unattended. Attend with a buddy and plan on looking out for one another.
  • Added protection: carry a self defense tool built with civilian protection in mind. Look for one with mobile integration which will trigger an alert to law enforcement informing them of your GPS location.
