Dr. Terri Gleason: September 20, 2018

HEALTHY AGING at VA

VA Researchers are Developing New Approaches for Treatment Options

Dr. Terri Gleason, Director, Clinical Science Research and Development, Department of Veterans Affairs

To commemorate September as Healthy Aging Month, Dr. Terri Gleason is available for interviews to talk about how VA Research is contributing to ways that increase healthy aging for Veterans and other Americans. At VA, research priorities emphasize improving care for Veterans throughout their life span, beginning with the new Veteran leaving service up through the aging Veteran seeking to maintain health and function.

Aging research encompasses the physiological mechanisms of aging as well as the illnesses that become more prevalent with age. Aging research falls into several general categories that include, but are not limited to multiple chronic illnesses and comorbidities, end-of-life issues, and common aging syndromes.

VA Research focuses on the needs of Veterans through a variety of studies, such as translational research and genomics to understand how deployment exposures and risk factors influence health over time through the electronic health record. Another example is the development of new clinical treatments that helps improve care for patients with arthritis—arthritis affects 52.5 million Americans and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and it is the nation’s most common cause of disability. Some additional discussion topics may include recent findings as related to aging in the following areas:

  • Mental and behavioral health care
  • Long-term care and caregiver support
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Arthritis
  • Opioids
  • Cardiovascular disease/stroke
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease
